Laboratory Genetic Counseling

Dear Health Care Provider or Student: 

Considering a job in a clinical genetics laboratory?  Need more information about testing methodologies and interpreting results?  Want to understand the laboratory perspective?  The University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Genetic Counseling Program offers an Online Laboratory Genetic Counseling Course to meet these needs. Begin and proceed at a pace that is compatible with your schedule. Enrollment is continuous. This course covers roles for genetic counselors in the laboratory setting, molecular and cytogenetic testing methodologies and interpretation, as well as ethical and regulatory issues for clinical genetics labs.  Presenters include genetic counselors from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Molecular and Cytogenetics Laboratories as well as genetic counselors from other non-academic genetics laboratories.

Course is currently approved for up to 1.3 Category 1 CEUs. Cost is $175 plus a $25 CEU fee for those applying for CEUs.

Each lecture is presented using a combined audio/video format using streaming video and detailed PowerPoint slides.

The online version of this course was adapted by Carrie Atzinger, MS, LGC from the live version developed by Carrie Atzinger and Kristen Sund, MS, PhD, LGC.

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has authorized the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital/University of Cincinnati Genetic Counseling Program to offer up to 1.3 CEUs or 13.0 contact hours (Category 1) for the Laboratory Genetic Counseling Online Course.  The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of certification and recertification.
